To Mrs.
Brown's First Grade News
Remember we have a concert next week. The entire first grade will be singing,
reading, dancing, and prancing their way into a Thanksgiving story. They
will be performing on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 9:00 AM.
I am trying to get books home with your children
but I like to make sure they have good command of the book before sending
it home. We have been practicing so much for our concert, our reading has
not been as long as ususal. Two holidays on Tuesdays have also interrupted
our schedule. Soon...books will come home in baggie with your child's name
on it. Please read the book with your child. Practice is what all readers
need.
Writing is really taking off in our class.
Students are lengthening their pieces, beginning to add details and organize.
We have been noticing how stories have a beginning, middle, and end. Spelling
is coming along nicely as is general knowledge about basic phonetic principles.
Last year, I wrote two grants for classroom materials at Donorschoose.com.
Both requests were awarded to our class. We received multiple copies of
books for our reading program and science materials to enhance our science
curriculum. The two grants totaled more than $1100. I have just written
another grant asking for money for a classroom subscription to BrainPop.
BrainPop is an intereactive Internet site where children can view mini clips
about science, social studies, health, and math concepts. (check it out
at www.brainpop.com) They put things like life-cycles into kid language
and cartoon format. The program costs $255 for the school year. Our
proposal is at the following site. If you or someone you know likes to donate
funds to our school, please direct them to the following link.
We are only 98 dollars away from reaching our goal!!
Our Proposal
Social Studies is all about Pilgrims and Native Americans right now. We
are reading books, looking at maps and globes, and working on some art projects
having to do with early life in America. We will be comparing and contrasting
life in the 1600's with our life today.
